Just a couple of months until the LORC season starts for 2009. LORC will be using the same online registration program as last year. It was easy to use and worked extremely well. All LORC races except for the RCYC Open Regatta will use the online registration. RCYC will be handling their own registration, which will be accessed from the RCYC web site.
The 2009 LORC Schedule has been posted for some time now, look under Racing on the LORC web site. Your comments, suggestions and additions to our e-mail list are welcome.
Severn, Quest and Bangalore were the top three boats overall this weekend. Saturday saw 7 yachts on the line – Severn, Quest, Bangalore, Sarissa, Thisbe, Ranja and Norseman. On Sunday Thisbe, Norseman and Sarissa did not race.

Six of the RCYC fleet were out for the races on Saturday & Sunday last weekend. Light winds of up to 8 knots or so under sunny skies with smooth water on Saturday and a little more easterly wind on Sunday with overcast skies & cool temperatures with some wave action.
The first race started with a postponement while we waited for the wind to settle in and the race committee to get their string sorted out for the marks. Our plan was to start mid-line and tack away to right side of the course to where we felt the wind was fresher. We were able to carry things out as planned and found ourselves in first spot at the windward mark ahead of Venture and the rest of the fleet followed by Norseman who had to go back to the start for an over-early call. On the downwind Severn reached over to the right side, but Venture got our inside preventing us from gybing away for clear air and maintaining our lead. We kept close down the leg, but Venture pulled ahead for good at the leeward mark covering us up-wind and all the way on the final leg to the finish . We settled for second with Ranja taking a closing third followed by Thisbe, Norseman and Quest. Continue reading ABYC Open Race Report, from the helm of Servern
Ahem, ok, the headline should be Thisbe wins the party, but Venture II wins the race. Being the webmaster allows the privilege to skew the headline, I won’t take advantage often, but from time-to-time I must. What is the real story? Actual results follow.
It was a well raced weekend in my opinion. The fleet stayed close with bullets being distributed between Venture II (1), Severn II (2) and Quest (1). Good work crews. I am sure Severn-Ced will have some wild story about the racing, the truth is we all had a great weekend, each participating crew placing in the top three at least once. If this regatta is an indication, NAEMA should have a very exciting season.
I am looking forward to what Iskareen, Jackeen and Bangalore have in store. Add the moderns and the 2007 Mackenzie North American Championship will be the greatest big-yacht racing on Lake Ontario!
Back to the party. What a great way to celebrate the first racing of the season than with a BBQ? Trick question, there is no better way. For starters, ABYC Open Regatta sponsor Amsterdam Brewing provided a few samples of their fine fine product (Hey Jeff Carefoot, you can deliver more samples to the RCYC c/o Caullyn Godfrey of Thisbe – haha), delicious and cold Amsterdam Blonde Ale. Well primed and hungry, the ABYC BBQ was a measly $8! For eight bucks I had a HEAPING pulled pork sandwich, Tandoori Chicken drummies, a curried veggie patty in a pita, savory potato salad and a full selection of green salads and coleslaw. I am a big fella, and I was stuffed! Even Bart Meuring was satisfied by the hungry-man meal. There was the band playing the usual regatta tunes from Bob Marley to Jimmy Buffet with a healthy mix of classic rock from the 60′s-90′s.
For some, the party may have been a little too wild, with some poor decision making. Sunday morning the race committee had to announce there would be no racing until someone returned the “missing” spin-poles from a few of the J’s and Beneteau’s. The AP was up for an hour before they magically re-appeared. There are still a few missing advertising banners, but at least the postponement had ended.
The first official racing weekend of the season is fast approaching. ABYC should be a great series and a fine season kick-off party. See you there!
Here are the details from the ABYC site.
ABYC has merged its One-Design Invitational Regatta and its LORC Open Regatta this year. The combined event is part of the LORC Open Regatta Season.
The Notice of Race is on the LORC website (http://www.lorc.org). From the LORC home page click on “2007 Open Regatta Notice of Race”.
The Sailing Instructions will be located here seven days before the race. All classes except J/24 and J/22 will register through LORC. See the NoR for details. The J/24 and J/22 fleets will register through ABYC. An amendment to the NoR concerning registration for these classes will be posted on the LORC website. To get the respective registration forms for J/24 and J/22 classes ONLY, click here and here.
Five separate courses are planned to minimize time waiting for starts and maximize compatibility between fleets on each course.

It is with deep sadness that we learned that on December 4th, 2011, our friend Werner Schifferl has passed away. For so many years Werner raced and cruised his Bera, the famous 1924 Olympic Gold medallist. With a crew of family and friends, he participated in any event that would somehow fit his always busy schedule. Werner sailed his boat and lead his team […]
