2009 LORC Season News

Just a couple of months until the LORC season starts for 2009.  LORC will be using the same online registration program as last year.  It was easy to use and worked extremely well.  All LORC races except for the RCYC Open Regatta will use the online registration.  RCYC will be handling their own registration, which will be accessed from the RCYC web site.

The 2009 LORC Schedule has been posted for some time now, look under Racing on the LORC web site.

Your comments, suggestions and additions to our e-mail list are welcome.

2009 Ski Weekend Report

Thanks to Ced Gyles for this report: The photos will be in the next posting.

The 2009 8 Metre Ski Weekend event was held at Blue Mountain on Saturday, February 14th under sunny skies, with perfect ski temperatures and fabulous snow conditions.  And though we had representation attend the event from all of the yachts in our Fleet, we were a little lighter in the participation for this year’s race.  The yachts that did participate had some very competitive and fun racing which of course was carried over afterwards at the après party with the “shot ski”.  We again had a race course that was a little longer than in prior years, which received good reviews from the competitors, and some for their first time!  Many thanks to Blue for the day and the race course organizing.

Of note was that Michael Jones representing Broad Reach introduced himself and the Charity at lunch.  He not only invited all of our group to attend their event next year but issued a challenge to the winner of our race to compete against the best from theirs.  And in turn, we have reciprocated and invited them to our event next year.

With the great weather, participants were able enjoy their Pastissima sausage and salads lunch on the balcony looking out at the hill from the Gyles chalet.  Joe Balogh conjured up another batch of his famous Hungarian goulash for the dinner, perhaps even spicier than usual, followed by some excellent strudel, (though you can’t smile and show your teeth after eating the poppy seeds until you have rinsed your mouth).

Many thanks to Barb & Ced Gyles for hosting the lunch and Joe Balogh for the dinner at their chalets.  Their hospitality is much appreciated!  And special thanks to all of their helpers in the purchasing, preparing, serving, and clean-up of the meals and the party.  Also thanks to North Sails, Quantum Sail Design Group, and UK-Halsey Sailmakers for supplying this year’s prizes.

We had a great time on and off the hill and look forward to seeing everyone again as we get our boats ready for the 2009 sailing season.

Sarissa represents NAEMA at the Toronto International Boat Show

Toronto International Boat show | January 10 – 18
Direct energy Centre, Exhibition Place.

With its combination of classic and modern yachts the 8 Metre racing program truly lives up to its image of being the
“best big boat racing on Lake Ontario.”

From January 10th to the 18th, Ralph Reiman’s 8 Metre, Sarissa (designed by Ed Dubois) will be on display at the Toronto International Boat Show to bring attention to the North American 8 Metre Association’s (NAEMA) yacht racing program. The 8 Metre fleet is currently building towards the 2010 World Championships hosted by RCYC and 2011 World Championships held at NYYC in Newport, Rhode Island.“The chance to showcase our growing modern fleet and speak with people who might be interested but think that we might be unapproachable is a tremendous promotional opportunity” says Robert Roy, President of NAEMA. “New boats are coming into the fleet and are available. NAEMA is looking to build crews as well as attract potential owners and sponsors for our events. We need to get the message out that we are looking for people.”

Join us at the Boat Show to find out more.

6:30 P.M.

Canada Room – RCYC (City Club)

Farq-UK nice spread!

Mr. James Farquharson of Lake Ontario’s favourite Swedish 8m RANJA is busy working in London for the season, but has made time to create a really nice spreadsheet to track the season results. You can find it here for now, or you can look to the top banner and select  “TRACKING”.

Thanks Jamie!

Ladies and Gentlemen, start your grinders!

The ice has finally melted away from most of the city, even the ugly bits at road-side have been cleaned away by the mild weather and nice rain we had yesturday. It must be spring. I am sure the chandleries and hardware shops are eagerly awaiting our arrival to top-up supplies of grinder pads, sand paper, west system, vaccuum bags, and of course vast quantities of rum. I am looking forward to rushing for the first work boat on Saturday mornings to have a look what the cold has left for us to repair, have a seat, gossip about what Bart has done “this time” and drink cold rum out of dirty Tuesday night mugs. I am sure you have a similar routine. That being said there are a few items we need to sort out for the site this year, I have been told it needs a little dusting and a patch here and there, so, if you have any suggestions, and would like to contribute to NAEMA.net, please let me know.

Email me with content, photos, ideas. Perhaps you would like to join Ced with a weekly race report (we need someone to balance the Severnian opinion). This year so far we have a commitment from John Mitchele (AKA Buck) and from Guy – Ranja Rants. I suggest the fleet choose a representative from their crew to submit something for the site for each regatta. We are also looking for a party reporter… Will Gyles, this job (non-paying) was made for you!

There is one last bit of business (imagine Columbo almost making his way out the door to spring “one last thing” upon you), it is time to pay your 2007 NAEMA member dues, there is a link at the right hand menu of the site for your convenience.

Happy wet-sanding!
Caullyn.
