Mackenzie Regatta Race Nights

Mackenzie Financial Services the sponsor of the International Eight Metre Championships at the RCYC ( August 21 -28 ) brings its clients and staff out to experience 8mR yacht Racing in a special regatta run by NAEMA. Over five evenings close to 200 of Mackenzie’s guests get to experience the best in big boat racing on Lake Ontario. A total of  seven yachts is used to give a good simulation of fleet racing and the guests are expected to actively participate in all aspects of rigging and racing their assigned yacht to victory. Of course those who just want to cruise and observe are allowed relax and enjoy an evening on the water. The race is given an official start line with a five minute count-down and then the chase is on around the T2 marker buoy at the entrance to the Toronto Habour Eastern Gap and back. Upon returning to the RCYC drinks and dinner are served for all crew and guests on the second floor veranda of the Island Club House, which is a wonderful way to end a great sailing race. The winner of the first evening in 2010 was Iskareen. Mackenzie’s unique sponsorship arrangement with NAEMA and the 8mR fleet goes back to the 2005 World Championships and we are extremely grateful for their continued interest and support.

Ski weekend report from Ced Gyles

I can easily report that another good 8 Metre Ski Weekend has taken place at Blue Mountain this past weekend. Good weather and great ski conditions combined with the company of those attending made for a good time on the hill and at the party over lunch and at dinner. We had more racers running the course this year representing seven of our fleet together with hillside support from another two from our number.

Many thanks to chalet hosts Ced Gyles for lunch (and all of their chalet volunteers, especially Nia and Ken, Christine & Bev Rogers, and Denis), and to Joe Balogh for dinner (supported by their chalet crew and from Quest). The good après fare all round complimented the day on the slopes to make this a memorable one.

And thanks to our sponsors: Evolution Sails, North Sails, and UK-Halsey Sailmakers for contributing to the prizes. Very much appreciated.

Andrew Alberti to offer a new rules seminar for 8 Metre sailors.

Shannon Howard has organized with Andrew Alberti to offer a new rules seminar for 8 Metre sailors.  The presentation will describe the changes introduced in the 2009-2012 Racing Rules of Sailing.  The changes in the wording of the rules are fairly extensive compared to the number of differences that will actually change the way we have to race.  The evening therefore will address the way the new rules will change the game.
The date of Wednesday April 29th has been confirmed by Andrew Alberti, the time of  7 – 9 pm has been confirmed by the majority of those who have responded, and the dining room space at the City Club on 141 St. George St has been confirmed available by the RCYC.
There will be some light sandwich fare and refreshments offered courtesy of Shannon Howard for those attending.  In addition, the RCYC food and beverage service is available prior to the start of the session and up until 9 pm.
Should you be unable to attend, please advise, otherwise we’ll see you there.

RCYC – Royal Weekend Results

What a great weekend for sunshine! It took the wind until 11AM to arrive, but it did arrive for the nine 8m’s on the line to battle out for glory. Ultimately it was Sarissa that found her way around the course with the greatest success – 1,1,1 followed extremely closely by the gleaming green Venture II who raced an impressive 2,2,2 with lots of boat speed, and excellent tactics. But it was Thisbe(3,5,4), Severn II(7,4,3) and Norseman(6,3,5) who battled out for the next 3 spots in an extremely close run – with Jackeen(4,8,8), Bangalore(8,6,6), Quest(5,9,7) and Ranja(9,7,9) each racing smartly on the North Shore of Lake Ontario.
